Obituary for George "Sam" Bradford Goodwin

lt is announced with great sorrow that on August 20, 2022, George Bradford " Sam" Goodwin of Yarmouth. N.S; passed away peacefully at The Meadows Home for Special Care. Born and raised in Yarmouth, N.S. on February 23, 1934, to the late John and Ruth (Hayes) Goodwin, Sam was the youngest of eight children and was the last surviving member Of his immediate family.

Sam was a truly humble person who placed a high value on friendships, hard work, family and his Christian faith. Not one to take things for granted, Sam often spoke openly with gratitude and was so appreciative for the good people and things in his life. At the young age of eleven, Sam had to leave school to help support his family. Some of his early jobs were peddling mackerel by bicycle, at Canadian Tire, Kirk Brothers and W.B. Baileys'. Sam also went on to take evening courses at the Yarmouth Vocational School. Despite having minimal education Sam was later offered a job with Imperial Oil. This opportunity marked a pivotal time in his life and thus began his career which spanned forty-five years. During this time, together with his wife Nancy, he branched out with his own business, Sam Goodwin's Burner Service. He also owned and operated CPH Dry Cleaners Ltd. In Yarmouth for twenty-five years. Sam loved and was very dedicated to his work and often talked of his many, many wonderful customers that he so enjoyed serving. He formed lasting friendships with so many people and business partners in Yarmouth and beyond.

In his younger years, Sam was a volunteer with the Yarmouth Fire Department. He enjoyed playing ball as well as watching hockey, boxing and was a fan of the Toronto Blue Jays. Camping and vacationing with family and friends, spending time with his grandchildren and later great-grandchildren, were the most memorable times for him. He also had a soft spot for all animals, big and small and enjoyed their company. Church was a big part of Sam's life and he was a member of Zion United Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He attended there until its closure and later found a new church family at Temple Baptist.

In retirement, Sam enjoyed taking care of his property. He could often be seen raking and mowing, hours on end, chatting with anyone who passed by. Spending time in his garage which was his happy place, friends would always stop and visit. Sam also had a love for music and regularly attended The Coal Shed and community music nights in Pembroke and Greenville.

Sam was raised in the south end of Yarmouth and always remained a proud south-ender. If there is only one thing Sam would be remembered for, it would likely be his generosity. He never forgot where he came from or the hardships his family faced when he was a child. He made giving back to his community an integral part of his life. Having a compassionate heart, he never hesitated extending kindness and a helping hand to others, to the best of his ability, wherever and whenever he could. Oren times his furnace work was done free of charge.

Besides his parents, Sam was predeceased by brothers lvan, Bucky, sisters lna, Jane, Mary, Eliza, Violet, wife Nancy, a daughter in infancy, stillborn great-granddaughter, Willa Elizabeth. Surviving are daughters Cindy (Ken) d'Eon, Patti (Gaston) d'Entremont, Heidi Crowell, grandchildren, Brandon, Alicia, Kaitlin (Jamie LeRiche), Cody (Vladimir lvoninskii), Whitney (Brandon Goudey), Jenna (Scott Nickerson), Abbey (Nigel Hart), Cara (Timothy) Garden-Cole, Ashley (Connor) Brown, Chelsea (Corey) LeRue, Courtney (Cameron Appleby), great-grandchildren Madi, Kylie, Sadie, Violet, Hudson, Josie, nephew Danny Manser, faithful friend and former business partner, Desire Boudreau.

Most sincere thanks extended to Dr. Horton and to each of the amazing staff on Brook. Dad received such extraordinary and wonderful care and we are grateful he was able to spend his final days there.
